Man Killed in Solo-Vehicle Crash in Sussex County

Fatal car accidents do not have to involve multiple vehicles. Sometimes the impact involved in a solo-vehicle crash can be deadly to occupants.
Sadly, a man was recently killed in a crash in Sussex County. The fatal accident occurred in the early morning hours of May 17 in Sparta.
Police were called to Route 15 in Sparta after receiving reports of a car accident. A Kia K4 had veered off the roadway for unknown reasons. It was determined that the Kia had hit a guardrail. The impact launched it airborne over adjacent railroad tracks. It then came to rest in a wooded area near the highway, where it overturned.
There were three occupants in the vehicle. The driver, a 21-year-old man from Morris Township, died at the accident scene. The two other occupants were unidentified women. They were able to exit the vehicle on their own. They were taken to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Route 15 northbound was closed for around nine hours as emergency crews cleaned up the scene and police conducted a crash investigation. The crash remains under investigation by Sparta Police, the New Jersey State Police, and the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office.
Dangers of Driving Late at Night
Driving after dark can be more dangerous than driving during the day. Reduced visibility, fatigue, and impaired drivers all contribute to a higher risk of serious accidents. Here are some dangers to consider:
- Reduced visibility. At night, drivers have a harder time seeing road signs, curves, obstacles, pedestrians, cyclists, and animals. Headlights only illuminate a limited distance ahead, making it more difficult to react to sudden hazards.
- Driver fatigue. Many late-night crashes involve drowsy drivers. Fatigue can slow reaction times, impair judgment, reduce awareness, and even cause drivers to briefly fall asleep behind the wheel. Drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence.
- Impaired drivers. Late-night hours, especially on weekends, tend to see more drivers who are impaired by alcohol or drugs. Impaired driving affects coordination, decision-making, and reaction time, increasing the likelihood of collisions.
- Wildlife crossings. Animals are often more active at night and during the early morning hours. Deer, raccoons, and other wildlife can suddenly enter the roadway, giving drivers little time to avoid a crash.
- Glare from headlights. Bright headlights from oncoming vehicles can temporarily reduce visibility and make it difficult to judge distances, lane positions, and road conditions.
- Reduced depth perception. Darkness makes it harder to estimate the speed and distance of other vehicles. This can increase the risk of rear-end collisions, unsafe lane changes, and intersection crashes.
