Bicyclist Killed in Camden County Crash

Bicyclist3

Riding a bike has health benefits, but when compared to vehicles, bike riders don’t stand a chance. Cars and trucks often travel at high speeds and don’t always see smaller vehicles, such as bicycles. This can lead to serious and even fatal accidents.

Sadly, this was recently the case in New Jersey. A man was killed in a Camden County bicycle accident. The fatal crash occurred on the morning of November 13 in Berlin.

The 27-year-old bicyclist was at White Horse Pike and South Franklin Avenue. He was trying to cross White Horse Pike when he was hit by a car. He was unconscious when emergency crews arrived. He later died from his injuries.

The driver remained at the accident scene. According to a witness, the driver had a green light at the time of the crash. White Horse Pike was completely closed for almost three hours as police investigated.

Causes of Bicycle Crashes

Bicycle riders face dangers every time they are on the road. This is especially true if they are on public roads with motor vehicles.

Bicycle accidents can be caused by drivers or bike riders, but they are most often caused by drivers. That’s because many motorists do not know how to behave around bicycles. Bicycle riders are entitled to the same rights and privileges as motorists. However, it is no secret that many drivers treat cyclists as second-class citizens. They may drive aggressively and refuse to yield to them, leading to serious crashes. Drivers routinely put cyclists in dangerous situations. Motorists who aren’t paying attention can cause accidents before they even realize that cyclists are on the road.

Bicycle crashes can be caused by the following:

  • Distracted driving. Distracted driving is a leading cause of all types of vehicle accidents, including those involving bicycles. When drivers are paying attention to something else instead of their surroundings, they are much more likely to cause dangerous crashes.
  • Not leaving enough room. Drivers who follow cyclists too closely create extremely dangerous situations. They should leave at least 3 feet of room in all directions to avoid crashes.
  • Speeding increases drivers’ stopping time and limits the amount of time they have to make decisions on the road. This can be extremely dangerous for cyclists.
  • Unsafe lane changes. Making an unsafe lane change can be extremely dangerous. Drivers may merge into bicyclists’ lanes without first looking to ensure that the lane is clear. This can be catastrophic for bike riders.
