6 Students Injured Following Bus Crash in Edison

While school buses are sturdy and built very well, they can still be involved in crashes. This can be scary for parents.
A school bus was recently involved in an accident in Edison. The crash occurred on the afternoon of November 10 on Monday on New Durham Road.
A woman was driving a vehicle in the area when she became lightheaded. She suffered a medical episode and collided with a school bus on New Durham Road.
Following the crash, six students complained of pain. They were brought to a local hospital to be checked out due to complaints of pain. Fortunately, there appeared to be no major injuries. Police have not released any details about the driver.
The school bus was from Edison Success Academy, an alternative school in the Edison Public School District. The bus involved in the crash was a contracted bus. The accident is still under investigation and the school district is awaiting the final police report.
Medical Episodes While Driving
Medical emergencies behind the wheel are more common than many people realize, and they can lead to serious accidents with little or no warning. A medical episode refers to any sudden health event that impairs a driver’s ability to safely operate a vehicle. These incidents can range from mild dizziness to life-threatening conditions such as heart attacks or seizures. They often leave drivers with little time to react.
Several health conditions can suddenly affect a driver’s awareness, control, or reaction time. Common medical episodes include:
- Heart attacks. Sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, and loss of consciousness can cause immediate loss of vehicle control.
- A stroke can impair vision, mobility, speech, or coordination without warning.
- These can cause total loss of control and awareness.
- Diabetic emergencies. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) may cause confusion, disorientation, or fainting.
- Fainting or blackouts. These are often caused by heart rhythm problems, dehydration, or blood pressure issues.
- Respiratory distress. Severe asthma attacks or allergic reactions can lead to panic, weakness, or impaired breathing.
- Medication side effects. Drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, or delayed reactions can occur from prescription or over-the-counter drugs.
Many medical emergencies occur without symptoms, but some people experience the following warning signs:
- Sudden dizziness
- Chest tightness
- Numbness or weakness in the face or limbs
- Blurred vision
- Confusion or trouble focusing
- Severe headache
- Feeling faint or lightheaded
If any of these symptoms appear, the safest action is to pull over immediately and call for medical help.
