4 Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash

CarCrash10

A multi-vehicle crash in New Jersey has led to fatalities. Four people were killed and several others were injured in the four-vehicle accident in Morris County.

The fatal crash occurred on the afternoon of April 10 on Route 10. First responders witnessed an accident at the intersection with Millbrook Avenue. The crash included a school minivan school vehicle registered to Alyft Transport LLC. It was carrying employees and students from the P.G. Chambers School, a nonprofit in Hanover that teaches children with disabilities.

The four people killed were a 4-year-old boy and three women, ages 58, 67, and 71. All were  confirmed to be riding in the school minivan. At least four other people were injured in the crash. Two adults were treated at the accident scene, while two children were taken to a local hospital.

The 4-year-old boy, who had special needs, was initially transferred to Morristown Hospital, but he died the day after the crash. His family is dealing with an unimaginable loss, calling the boy “a sweet, courageous child whose light shone brightly despite the challenges he faced.” The family hopes to bury the boy in their homeland of Honduras.

Dangers of Multi-Vehicle Crashes

The more vehicles involved, the more likely serious injuries and fatalities will occur. Here’s a look at the dangers of multi-vehicle crashes:

  • Multiple impacts. Unlike single or two-car accidents, victims in multi-vehicle crashes often endure multiple collisions. Each additional impact increases the potential for severe injuries, especially to the head, spine, and internal organs.
  • Chain reactions. These crashes often start with one impact and quickly escalate, making it difficult for drivers behind to react in time. Rear-end collisions are common, compounding damage and injuries.
  • Vehicle entrapment: Cars can be crushed between others, trapping occupants inside. Rescue crews may struggle to access victims, delaying critical medical attention.
  • Fire hazards. With many vehicles involved, the chances of fuel leaks and fires increase. If ignited, flames can spread rapidly before everyone is able to evacuate.
  • Confusion and panic. The sudden, chaotic nature of multi-car pileups can cause drivers to make poor decisions, like swerving into other lanes or stopping in unsafe areas. This increases the risk of secondary crashes.
  • Traffic hazards. Multi-vehicle crashes often occur on highways where speeds are high. These crashes can completely block lanes, putting other drivers at risk of additional collisions as they attempt to avoid the wreckage.
  • Psychological trauma: Survivors often suffer from lasting psychological effects like PTSD, especially after witnessing severe injuries or fatalities.
