2 NJ Women Killed in Hit and Run Crash in Newark

When you are involved in a car accident, you need to stop and offer assistance. A driver did not do that and he ended up killing two women.
The New Jersey women were walking home from a World Cup watch party on June 20 when they were hit and killed by a man. The fatal accident occurred at the intersection of Park Avenue and North 7th Street in Newark.
The women, ages 58 and 61, were walking in the intersection when a driver raced through the intersection as the light was changing. The man hit both women, with the impact causing both to become airborne. The women were taken to University Hospital Newark, where they later died.
The driver fled the accident scene. However, street surveillance cameras showed the suspect in action. One witness alleged that the man stepped on the gas while the light was changing, like he was intoxicated.
The driver, a 26-year-old man from Newark, surrendered to police three days after the crash.
He faces multiple criminal charges, including two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide, two counts of second-degree leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death, and two counts of third-degree endangering an injured victim. The man is being held in Essex County jail, with no bond set.
What to Know About Hit and Run Accidents
A hit and run accident is a traffic collision in which a driver leaves the scene without stopping to fulfill their legal obligations. The exact laws vary by country and state, but in most places drivers are required to stop, exchange information, and, if necessary, provide reasonable assistance to anyone who is injured.
A hit and run can involve:
- Hitting another vehicle and driving away.
- Striking a pedestrian or cyclist and leaving.
- Damaging parked cars or other property without attempting to notify the owner or authorities.
- Leaving the scene before providing required information.
Even a minor collision in a parking lot can qualify if the driver leaves without following the law.
If you are the victim, your priorities are safety and documentation:
- Check for injuries and call 911 for medical help.
- Move to a safe location if possible.
- Call the police to report the incident.
- Gather evidence, including the time and location, photos of the damage and scene, witness names and contact information, and any details about the other vehicle, such as its license plate, make, model, color, or direction of travel.
- Look for nearby security or dash camera footage.
- Notify your insurance company.
