Woman Suffers Brain Injury After Being Hit By Bat at Yankees Game

Going to a baseball game should be a fun experience but for one New Jersey woman, it allegedly resulted in a head injury.
The woman is suing the New York Yankees for $10 million after a baseball bat flew into the stands at Yankee Stadium and struck her in the head. She claims she suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result.
The 37-year-old woman filed the lawsuit on August 1 after she suffered injuries while attending a June 2 game between the Yankees and Cleveland Guardians. The lawsuit states that the woman was attending the game as a guest of her employer and was seated behind home plate.
During the game, a Guardians player lost control of his bat, sending it into the stands. The bat struck the woman in the head and hands, knocking her to the ground. The incident was actually broadcast live on the YES Network, so there is video evidence of the incident. The video showed the woman eventually getting back to her feet.
The lawsuit alleges the Yankees failed to provide adequate protection for spectators. Although netting was installed in front of the section where the woman was seated, the complaint claims there was an opening above the section where the bat entered the stands. It also alleges the netting was “materially lower” than the netting protecting nearby seating areas. The woman claims the inadequate height of the netting was directly responsible for her injuries.
The woman allegedly suffered a traumatic brain injury and has been unable to return to her professional role as a health care executive. She claims she has experienced physical injuries, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and a loss of enjoyment of life.
The lawsuit seeks $10 million in damages for past and future medical and rehabilitation expenses, lost earnings, physical injuries, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and other losses. The New York Yankees had not immediately responded to a request for comment.
