1 Killed, 8 Injured in Lacey Township Mass-Casualty Crash

Sometimes car accidents involve many people, resulting in numerous injuries and even fatalities.
One person was killed and eight others were injured in a major multi-vehicle crash on the Garden State Parkway in Lacey Township, New Jersey, on August 7. According to
New Jersey State Police, the crash claimed the life of a New York woman. The incident has been described as a mass-casualty situation.
The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office said that the crash occurred in the Forked River section of Lacey Township near mile marker 75. The collision took place between the Celia Cruz Service Area, formerly known as the Forked River Service Area, and Exit 74.
Emergency crews, including Lacey EMS, responded to the scene to assist those involved in the crash. Initial reports indicated that eight people were injured.
The severity of the crash prompted authorities to close the northbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway. Traffic backed up in the area as crews worked at the scene, and the roadway remained closed for several hours.
The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office initially said the northbound Parkway would be closed until further notice. The affected portion of the highway eventually reopened later that evening.
Authorities have not released additional details about the vehicles involved or what caused the collision. Investigators are continuing to work to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash.
What is a Mass-Casualty Crash?
A mass-casualty crash is a crash that produces a large number of injured or potentially injured people, creating a situation that requires an unusually large emergency response.
There is no single universal number of victims that automatically makes a crash a mass-casualty incident. The designation can depend on the circumstances and whether local emergency resources are overwhelmed or require additional support.
Calling a crash a mass-casualty incident generally signals that the number or severity of injuries is significant enough to require a coordinated emergency response. It does not necessarily mean that everyone involved suffered life-threatening injuries. It is also important to know that the exact classification and number of injured people can change as authorities complete their investigation.
A major crash may require:
- Multiple ambulances and emergency medical crews.
- Firefighters and rescue personnel to free people from vehicles.
- Triage, in which victims are quickly assessed and prioritized based on the severity of their injuries.
- Multiple hospitals to receive injured people rather than sending everyone to one facility.
- Law enforcement and traffic-control resources.
- Road closures or significant traffic restrictions.
- Coordination among several emergency agencies.
