Boy Killed in Pedestrian Accident Involving School Bus; Report Released

Bus-pedestrian accidents are among the most serious traffic collisions because of a bus’s large size, weight, and limited maneuverability. These crashes often occur in busy urban areas, at bus stops, crosswalks, intersections, and school zones where pedestrians and buses frequently interact. Even at relatively low speeds, a pedestrian struck by a bus can suffer fatal injuries.

Sadly, this was recently the case in New Jersey. A young boy was killed in a school bus accident in May after he was hit while crossing a street. A report has been released and there is also an internal review underway.

The fatal bus crash occurred on the afternoon of May 8 near Bennett Avenue and Ashton Drive in Greenwich Township. A 7-year-old boy from Gibbstown was hit by his school bus while he was crossing the street. Witnesses and responding officers performed CPR on the boy. He was then taken to Cooper University Hospital, where he later died.

The bus driver was a 48-year-old woman who worked for Holcomb Bus Services. She was transporting 28 students in kindergarten through fifth grade from Broad Street Elementary School.

The bus stopped near the intersection of Bennett Street and Ashton Drive to unload students. The boy and a 10-year-old girl walked north along the sidewalk to the intersection. They stopped before crossing the street.

However, as the two students began to cross Ashton Drive, the bus moved forward and proceeded to make a right turn onto Ashton Drive. That was when the school bus hit the 7-year-old boy. Nobody else was injured in the crash. The Greenwich Township School District in New Jersey had counseling services available for students.

According to Holcomb Bus Services, the driver has been with the company since 2024 and had no prior issues. The company stated it was “heartbroken” over the tragedy. Holcomb Bus Service is fully cooperating with all relevant authorities as it works to determine the cause of the accident. The company has also launched its own internal review to understand exactly what happened and to prevent the same thing from happening in the future.

Law enforcement officials have not released additional details about how the crash occurred. It is unknown if the bus driver will face any criminal charges. The fatal accident is still under investigation.
