2 Teens Killed in E-Bike Accident

E-bikes are growing in popularity. While these bikes can be safe if operated properly, there are motor vehicle drivers who will intentionally hit these riders.
Sadly, this was recently the case in New Jersey, and it led to fatalities. Two 17-year-old girls were fatally struck while riding their electric bikes in Cranford on the evening of September 29. The collision occurred on Burnside Avenue, a residential street with a 25 mph speed limit. The victims were taken to local hospitals for treatment, but died overnight.
The alleged driver, a 17-year-old from Garwood, reportedly fled the accident scene and abandoned his vehicle before being apprehended. He was initially detained and questioned by authorities but was released pending further investigation. He was later arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder following a comprehensive investigation by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office.
It is believed the teens were either heading to school for an event or were heading home after the event when they were hit by the vehicle. Relatives and neighbors claim the suspect had been stalking one of the victims for several months, with reports made to both the school and local police. Despite these allegations, no action was reportedly taken prior to the incident. The community has expressed outrage over the handling of the situation and the tragic loss of the two young lives.
A vigil was held to honor the victims, drawing hundreds of mourners who gathered to remember the two girls and demand justice. The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement officials continuing to seek any additional information from the public. It is still unknown if the crash was accidental or intentional, but family and friends say it was a premeditated attack.
Premeditated Attack With a Vehicle
In this case, people close to the victims say this was a premeditated attack. The suspect was charged with murder, so it is likely to be the case.
A premeditated attack with a vehicle occurs when someone plans and uses a car or other motor vehicle deliberately as a weapon to injure or kill another person. It is treated as a violent, criminal act and not a routine traffic crash. Prosecutors will pursue far tougher charges when they can prove planning or intent.
Strong indicators of intent include:
- Surveillance or phone records showing prior planning, route research, messages, or threats.
- Information from the event data recorder showing speed, acceleration, and steering before and during a crash.
- Video evidence from dash cams, traffic cameras, and CCTV capturing deliberate steering, braking, or pursuit.
- Witness testimony about aggressive behavior, stalking, prior threats, or the driver’s actions at the scene.
- Post‑crash conduct, such as attempts to destroy the vehicle, flee, or change appearance can prove guilt.

Bicycles lack protection. Accidents often result in serious injuries or fatalities, and intentionally hitting someone on a bike can be considered murder. Crashes like this are devastating when previous bad behavior such as stalking is discovered but no action is taken by authorities.
