Woman Attacked by Pit Bull

PitBill2

When you think of dog attacks, you may think of people being bitten by random dogs, but many attacks involve family pets. A woman was recently injured by one of their pit bulls.

The incident happened on January 10.  Two police officers from the Hackensack Police Department responded to an apartment on Hudson Street, near Jackson Avenue in Hackensack. A woman was screaming for help. When police arrived, they found a 40-year-old woman next to an American pit bull. The woman was bleeding profusely, with her arms all chewed up.

The officers said it was a gruesome sight. Her 1-year-old son was in a playpen in a corner. There was another pit bull lying over there. The woman suffered lacerations to her arm and hand. She was taken to a local hospital. Her current condition is unknown.

Police took the boy out of the home. It is unknown if he suffered any injuries. However, two other dogs in the home were mauled by the pit bull. The woman was fostering the dog who attacked her. In total, there were four dogs in the apartment.

Bergen County Animal Control took custody of the dogs. The incident exhibited true teamwork, as the Hackensack Fire Department, along with the health and building departments, also responded to the scene.

The two police officers are being saluted for their heroic act. They were courageous enough to quickly rescue the child and contain the pit bull so that it could not cause further harm. The officers also administered life-saving treatment to the woman.

Dangers of Pit Bulls

Pit bulls are often seen as aggressive and dangerous dogs. While this is often the case, here are several key points to consider:

  • Owner responsibility. The behavior of a dog, regardless of its breed, is heavily influenced by its upbringing, socialization, and training. Irresponsible ownership, including neglect, abuse, and improper training, can contribute to aggression and behavioral issues in any dog breed, including pit bulls.
  • Genetics and breeding. Genetics play a role in a dog’s behavior, While pit bulls are not inherently more aggressive than other breeds, they were historically bred for specific tasks like bull-baiting and dogfighting, which may influence certain behavioral traits.
  • Potential for harm. Pit bulls are a large and powerful breed. They have the physical capability to inflict serious harm if they display aggressive behavior. Due to their strength and athleticism, it’s crucial for pit bull owners to properly train their dogs in order to prevent such harm.
