New Jersey Cracking Down on Distracted Driving

Distracted driving has become a serious issue in recent years. New Jersey motorists often think they have to multitask while driving. They think they need to be reachable at all hours of the day.
This leads to people using their phones constantly, even while driving. They use their phones to call, text, search the internet, and post on social media — all while behind the wheel.
New Jersey is tired of it and is starting to crack down on distracted driving. Law enforcement officials in the state started a month-long effort on April 1. Police agencies were given more than $1 million in public grants to promote the “Put the Phone Away or Pay” campaign. The money will support efforts to enforce laws prohibiting distracted driving such as texting and talking on the phone. Police will be out in full force in New Jersey from April 1 through April 30.
Police agencies hope this public awareness campaign will help ensure that drivers focus on the road and not their phones. In 2023, almost half — 48% — of accidents across New Jersey involved distracted driving. There were 160 fatalities and 1,400 serious injuries because of it.
Over $1 million will be spread across 19 counties and 158 law enforcement agencies to help combat distracted driving. An additional $211,820 was given to the New Jersey State Police to enforce distracted driving laws on the Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, interstates, and other roads they patrol.
Tickets for distracted driving come with hefty fines. A first offense can range from $200 to $400, while subsequent offenses can reach $800.
There was a similar program in the state last year. Law enforcement officials issued 9,055 citations for cell phone use while driving, and another 4,800 for careless driving.
Dangers of Distracted Driving
Distracted driving refers to any activity that diverts a driver’s attention away from driving. This includes texting, talking on the phone, eating or drinking, using a GPS, changing the radio, or even talking to passengers. The most dangerous form is texting because it involves visual, manual, and cognitive distraction. This means your eyes, hands, and mind are all off the road.
Distracted driving significantly increases the likelihood of car accidents, injuries, and fatalities. In the United States, more than 3,000 people are killed every year due to distracted driving.
