Motorcyclist Injured in Egg Harbor Township Crash

Motorcycles

Motorcycle riders can get seriously injured in a crash. This is especially true if another driver is driving drunk. This was recently the case in New Jersey.

A man was seriously injured when his motorcycle was hit by a drunk driver. The accident happened on the evening of November 25 on the Black Horse Pike at Silver Avenue in Egg Harbor Township.

A Volvo being driven by a woman from Egg Harbor Township was heading east on the Black Horse Pike. The vehicle was stopped at the intersection with Silver Avenue. The driver was attempting to turn north onto Silver Avenue.

That was when she pulled out in front of a Harley-Davidson ridden by a man from Egg Harbor Township. He was heading west on the Black Horse Pike. He attempted to brake and swerve to avoid a crash, but his motorcycle rear-ended the Volvo. The impact caused him to be ejected from the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries from the crash. He was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s Trauma Unit for treatment. The woman in the Volvo was not injured. However, she was issued multiple citations for driving while intoxicated and assault by auto. The Black Horse Pike was closed for roughly two hours as police investigated.

Dangers of Drunk Driving

Intoxication can lead to a lot of health issues that can make driving impossible to do safely. Here are some effects of alcohol:

  • Slower reaction times. Alcohol affects your ability to respond to situations. With a delay in reaction time, it is harder for drivers to avoid hazards quickly enough, resulting in accidents or injuries.
  • Reduced concentration. Alcohol affects concentration. It can make you easily distracted or struggle to focus on hazards in front of you.
  • Impaired hand-eye coordination. Being under the influence of alcohol affects the body’s nervous system and impairs motor skills. This means a drunk driver has less hand-eye coordination, which is vital for driving. Police officers will test hand-eye coordination by having the driver walk in a straight line or balance on one foot.
  • Poor judgment. Intoxication affects the part of your brain responsible for judgment and rational thinking. Alcohol consumption causes individuals to make decisions without considering the consequences. This means you may think you are fine to drive, even if you have had several drinks.
  • Memory loss. Drinking also causes memory lapses, where your brain doesn’t transfer short-term memories into long-term memories. Drivers may also experience blackouts. When this happens, you may not be aware of your actions.
