Man Injured, Dog Killed in Dog Attack

Dog attacks can be dangerous situations. They can happen suddenly, even while a person is walking through the neighborhood. A New Jersey man recently experienced this first hand. He was injured and his dog was killed while walking in a Montvale neighborhood.
The man was walking his dog on the evening of April 16. The neighborhood is usually quiet and friendly, but on this particular night, two dogs came up behind the man, who is hearing and speech impaired, and mauled his Maltese dog.
A pit bull and German shepherd were biting the smaller dog and it was screaming. The man was also bitten on his hand by the attacking dogs. The woman in charge of the bigger dogs claimed the dogs got out of their fenced backyard. She tried to be as helpful as possible and came to the scene to cuddle the small dog, who was badly injured. She jumped into a police car and took off with the dog. However, the dog later died.
The German shepherd involved in the attack remained at the scene. The pit bull initially ran away, but was later caught.
Both dogs have been captured. An investigation is in progress to determine how the dogs escaped and whether criminal charges will be filed.
Residents in the neighborhood are shook up over the incident. They say it puts everyone on guard, especially when other dogs are around. They are trying to be really careful to keep their dogs safe and secure and make sure they cannot get out loose so they can prevent future incidents like this.
Why Do Dogs Attack Other Dogs?
Dogs may attack other dogs for a variety of reasons. Here’s a look at some of them:
- Territorial behavior. Dogs are instinctively territorial animals. If another dog enters their home or yard, they may see it as a threat and react aggressively.
- Fear or anxiety. Fear-based aggression is often misunderstood. A fearful dog might attack another dog simply because it feels threatened and sees aggression as the only way to protect itself. This can happen suddenly and without warning.
- Lack of socialization. Dogs that haven’t been properly socialized during their critical developmental periods (usually before 16 weeks of age) may not understand how to read or respond to other dogs’ body language. This lack of understanding can cause them to misinterpret normal behavior as a threat.
- Resource guarding. Dogs sometimes view food, toys, resting spots, or even people as valuable resources worth protecting. When another dog gets too close to these resources, the guarding dog may growl, snap, or attack.
