Loose Rottweiler Bites Man in Arm

DogBark

Many people keep their dogs in their houses and yards, but an open door, window, or other means of escape can lead to attacks. Dogs have been known to cause serious injuries and even fatalities with their strong jaws and legs.

A rottweiler left a man with a wound on his arm after the dog escaped his yard. The 70-year-old man from South Brunswick was getting his mail when the dog attacked him on November 14.

The man was on a curb grabbing mail from his mailbox when the dog came running toward him. The rottweiler had come from a yard several houses away. The dog bit the man on the arm and he suffered a significant injury. The man was able to get back into his house and call 911. The  dispatcher could hear the dog barking outside.

Police officers arrived at the man’s home, but by then, the dog was gone. The man was found bleeding into his kitchen sink. One of the officers applied a tourniquet to the wound and the man was then taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The man was treated and has since returned home.

The owners of the dog are new to the area and just moved into the neighborhood a few months ago. The dog had escaped the yard before. South Jersey Animal Control issued a summons to the dog owners. The dog had to be quarantined for 10 days.

Rottweilers are known as powerful and protective dogs. Rottweilers that are not properly trained may be aggressive. When they are not properly socialized, they will feel threatened by strangers and may attack them.

Dog Bites and Common Injuries

Dog bites are common, but the good news is that most do not result in serious injuries. When they do cause injuries, the most common ones include:

  • Punctured skin
  • Broken bones
  • Head and neck injuries
  • Eye injuries
  • Face injuries
  • Nerve damage
  • Tissue damage
  • Scarring

Emotional trauma is also common. A dog attack can cause a lot of emotional distress, especially to a young child. Many children end up with a fear of dogs. Some people develop post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in which they experience constant nightmares, flashbacks, and memories of the dog bite incident. They are easily startled and constantly in fear. Those with PTSD may be irritable and aggressive. They may also have trouble concentrating and sleeping.

People need to be mindful of their dogs. Not all are loving, friendly creatures. Some will get loose and cause havoc, as well as serious injuries.

Dog owners need to be held responsible for the actions of their pets. New Jersey has a dog-bite Statute which provides that, in most cases, the dog owner is strictly responsible for any attacks by the dog, regardless of whether the dog has a history of viciousness or not.
