Construction Accident in Clifton Claims Life of Father of Four

A tragic construction accident in Clifton has left a community grieving after a boom lift tipped over and killed a 34-year-old worker on the morning of April 13.
According to witnesses, the incident occurred at a construction site on Main Avenue near Homer Street. A heavy orange boom lift, equipped with a front bucket, was in the process of being removed from a flatbed truck when it suddenly toppled onto its side. The equipment had been slated for use at a nearby project involving the construction of a two-story, 15,000-square-foot school at 294 Main Avenue.
Authorities identified the victim as a resident of Manahawkin. He was inside the lift’s cab at the time of the accident. He died at the accident scene.
Officials say the incident appears to be a tragic accident, though a full investigation is underway. Representatives from Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), along with the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene in addition to local police and fire departments. OSHA will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the equipment failure and whether any safety violations occurred.
The devastating loss has sent shockwaves through both the local community and the man’s hometown. Loved ones remember him as a devoted fiancé and a caring father to his four young children. Their church, Shore Life Church, described him as a deeply committed family man and has since organized an online fundraiser to support the grieving family.
The tragedy comes during an already challenging time for the family. Reports indicate they had recently been navigating a serious health battle involving their oldest child, who was declared cancer-free in October and is currently undergoing hyperbaric treatment. The man’s fiancé was attending one of those treatments when she received news of the fatal accident.
Dangers of Toppled Equipment
Toppled equipment is one of the most dangerous hazards on construction sites, often leading to catastrophic injuries or fatalities. Incidents involving machinery like boom lifts, cranes, and forklifts can happen suddenly and with little warning, making them especially deadly.
Common causes of equipment tip-overs include:
- Uneven or unstable ground.
- Overloading or exceeding weight limits.
- Improper setup or positioning.
- Operator error or lack of training.
- Mechanical failure or poor maintenance.
- High winds or adverse weather conditions.
Toppled equipment accidents are often preventable. With proper planning and training, construction sites can significantly lower the chances of these devastating events.
