1 Injured in NJ Dog Attack

A recent dog attack in New Jersey required the victim to be airlifted. The incident happened on the morning of May 27 in Wantage.
Troopers from the New Jersey State Police were called to a residence on Essex Road. A person there had suffered serious injuries from a dog attack. The person was airlifted from the Sussex County Airport to an area hospital. Reports state that the victim suffered a possible dismemberment.
Sussex County Animal Control removed the dog from the residence. The dog attack is still under investigation. No additional information was released.
Dismemberment from Dog Bite
A dog attack can cause catastrophic injuries, including dismemberment, which occurs when part of a person’s body is torn off or severed during an attack. These cases are rare, but they can happen in especially violent maulings involving prolonged attacks or multiple dogs. The victim in this case suffered possible dismemberment, but this was not confirmed and the dismembered body part was not disclosed.
Dogs have powerful jaws designed to grip, crush, and tear tissue. During a severe attack, injuries may include:
- Traumatic amputation of fingers, hands, toes, or ears
- Severe tearing of muscles, tendons, and skin
- Crushed bones and nerve damage
- Loss of scalp or facial tissue
- Permanent loss of limb function
Children, elderly adults, and people who fall to the ground during an attack are often at greater risk of devastating injuries.
In a severe dog attack, the body parts most commonly affected are the extremities, especially the hands, fingers, arms, feet, and parts of the face. These areas are most vulnerable because victims instinctively use them to shield themselves during an attack.
The forearms are commonly targeted when someone tries to fend off a dog. Severe attacks can result in:
- Extensive tissue loss.
- Crushed bones.
- Nerve destruction.
- Partial or complete loss of arm function.
Feet, ankles, and lower legs are common injury sites in attacks involving running victims, cyclists, mail carriers, or people knocked to the ground. In extreme cases, toes or portions of the foot may be amputated.
Victims of dismemberment injuries may face:
- Emergency surgery and hospitalization.
- Reconstructive or plastic surgery.
- Skin grafts and amputations.
- Physical rehabilitation.
- Permanent disability or disfigurement.
- Psychological trauma, including PTSD and anxiety.
Facial injuries can be especially traumatic because they may permanently alter appearance and affect speech, eating, or vision.
Dog owners can be held liable when their animal causes serious injuries. Severe mauling cases involving dismemberment often result in substantial claims because of lifelong medical costs, disability, and emotional harm.
