3 Teens Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash

CarRollover3

It’s always sad when young people are killed in car accidents. Sadly, three teens were killed in a chain reaction crash in Glassboro, New Jersey. The fatal crash happened on the afternoon of March 9.

The three teens — two 19-year-olds and a 17-year-old boy — were driving in a Honda. They were on the shoulder of Route 55, near Exit 48, heading north. One of the 19-year-olds was driving, while the other two were passengers.

At the same time, a 36-year-old woman was driving a Honda CRV. The 19-year-old’s car clipped it from behind, causing the teen to lose control. The car veered onto the right shoulder of the highway. It then hit a stationary minivan, causing it to overturn. There was an adult and three children inside.

All four of the minivan’s occupants were injured. The driver suffered serious injuries, while the children had minor injuries.

Both 19-year-olds in the Honda died at the accident scene. The 17-year-old later died at a local hospital. One 19-year-old had recently graduated from Delsea Regional High School, while the other two teens were current students.

The three teens were close friends who were always together. Their deaths have been described as an immense loss. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Causes of Loss of Control

Drivers can lose control of their vehicles due to a variety of reasons. Common causes include:

  • Speeding. Driving too fast reduces reaction time and makes it harder to control the vehicle, especially on curves or wet roads.
  • Weather conditions. Rain, snow, or ice can make roads slippery and reduce traction.
  • Distracted driving. Using a phone, eating, or adjusting controls can lead to a sudden loss of focus and control.
  • Impaired driving. Alcohol, drugs, or fatigue impair judgment and motor skills.
  • Mechanical failures. Tire blowouts, brake failures, or steering issues can cause sudden loss of control.
  • Overcorrection. Jerking the wheel in reaction to a perceived threat can lead to skidding or rollover.

In this case, the driver lost control after clipping another vehicle. Clipping another vehicle means making slight contact with it, usually by hitting the side or corner. This often happens when one vehicle is changing lanes, merging, or turning and misjudges the distance or timing. While a clip  typically implies a light impact, it can still cause visible damage and cause a driver to lose control, as seen in this case.
