20 Injured in Crash on New Jersey Turnpike

The New Jersey Turnpike is one of the busiest roadways in the country. The highway sees a constant flow of cars, trucks, and buses, making accidents common.
A four-vehicle crash recently occurred on the New Jersey Turnpike. Twenty people were injured in the accident, but fortunately, all suffered minor injuries.
Two passenger buses and two cars collided on the New Jersey Turnpike in Burlington County on the afternoon of May 4. The crash happened in the outer northbound lanes near mile marker 56.
New Jersey State police arrived at the accident scene. Twenty people were injured in the crash. Some of the injured people were taken to the hospital for treatment, while others were treated on the scene. Nobody was reported to suffer any major injuries and there were no fatalities connected to the crash.
Traffic near the crash was backed up for quite some time. The outer northbound lanes were shut down as New Jersey State Police investigated the crash.
Dangers of the New Jersey Turnpike
The New Jersey Turnpike is considered dangerous for several key reasons:
- High traffic volume. The New Jersey Turnpike is one of the busiest highways in the United States. It sees a constant flow of cars, trucks, and buses, especially near major cities like Newark and Jersey City.
- Heavy truck usage. The New Jersey Turnpike is a major freight corridor, so there are many large trucks on the road. These vehicles contribute to blind spots, longer stopping distances, and severe accident risks.
- High speeds. The speed limits go up to 65 mph and drivers often exceed them. Reaction time is reduced, especially during congestion or lane changes.
- Aggressive driving. Tailgating, rapid lane changes, and road rage are common, especially during rush hours.
- Complex interchanges. Exits near urban centers and airport access points can be confusing and lead to last-minute merges or stops.
Common types of crashes on the New Jersey Turnpike include:
- Rear-end collisions. These are often caused by sudden braking in heavy traffic, tailgating, or distracted driving.
- Sideswipe accidents. These happen frequently during lane changes, especially with aggressive or inattentive drivers and due to limited visibility around large trucks.
- Jackknife accidents. These involve tractor-trailers and occur when a truck’s trailer swings out of alignment with the cab, typically during sudden braking.
- Multi-vehicle pileups. Due to high speeds and dense traffic, especially in fog, rain, or snow, chain-reaction crashes can involve many vehicles.
