Man Dies By Granite Slab In Workplace Accident

BooksGavel

Workplace accidents can happen in a variety of ways. For example, heavy materials, such as granite, can cause catastrophic injury or death when they fall on an employee.

Sadly, this was recently the case in New Jersey. On the afternoon of April 21, a 37-year-old New Jersey man was killed when a large slab of granite fell on him while he was at work.

The incident occurred at Empire Marble and Granite, a facility located on Chris Court in South Brunswick. Police responded after receiving reports of an employee trapped under a granite slab. The man’s co-workers had been able to remove the slab. However, he suffered fatal injuries. He died at the accident scene.

Police investigated and learned that a customer had selected a block of granite. The man and other workers were moving the slab when it fell back on the victim. The man has not been identified, but he lived in Marlton and left behind a wife and kids. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the workplace accident.

What to Know About Workplace Accidents

Many people take their workplace for granted. They assume it will always be safe. And while many offices, factories, warehouses, and construction sites are safe, not all are. Employers do not always focus on safety. Promoting safe workplace practices takes time and money, which are things that employers do not always have. Instead, workers are forced to work on their own, without proper safety equipment or direction from their employers.

It is important for workers and employers to understand that accidents can happen in any environment—even in offices. Remote employees working from home can also suffer from serious accidents. When accidents do occur, they can be major and have a long-term impact—physically, emotionally, and financially.

Overexertion, such as handling extra-heavy materials, can cause workplace accidents. Too much physical activity can cause a worker to become overly tired. Even lifting smaller loads can be hard on a person’s body, especially their back.

Slips, trips, and falls are also common. Slippery surfaces may be present in any type of environment, causing a person to suffer back and neck injuries as well as head trauma, broken bones, and other injuries.

Cutting corners can also lead to workplace injuries. When employees are ordered to get work done more quickly, this can cause them to cut corners. When safety is compromised, a worker can suffer a serious or even life-threatening accident.

Working with heavy materials, such as granite, can be dangerous. If a worker loses their grip or balance and cannot control the heavy materials, they can get killed, as seen in this case.
