Woman Killed After 2 Cars Crash Into Newark Laundromat

CarAccidentLawsuit_

Washing clothes is a necessity unless you have the money to wear every outfit once and buy another. Many people do not have the luxury of doing laundry inside their home. They may have to go to a laundromat to get the job done, whether it is inside their apartment building or in a separate building down the street.

A person does not expect a vehicle to crash into a laundromat while they are inside, but sadly, this recently happened to a New Jersey woman. The woman was killed after not one, but two, vehicles collided into the building.

The incident happened on the afternoon of April 27 at 515 Irvington Avenue. The woman was sitting at a table near the front of the Ivy Hill Laundromat when a pickup truck crashed into a parked SUV. This caused both vehicles to collide with the laundromat. The woman died at the accident scene.

The victim has been identified as an 81-year-old woman from Newark. Her son remembered her as a hardworking woman who was retired from the Newark Board of Education. Her son also called her his best friend.

The owner of the parked SUV was inside picking up her laundry when the pickup truck crashed into her car. She believes her vehicle is totaled. “It’s horrific and we don’t see this every day,” she said.

There were close to 10 people inside the laundromat at the time, including the victim and an employee who was injured. A witness heard a big explosion and that was when the vehicles collided into the building.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. One customer said cars speed through the parking lot at times and called the area “like a raceway.”

Car Collisions With Buildings

Car collisions with buildings are more common than many people realize. These incidents can happen for a variety of reasons:

  • Driver error (such as confusing the gas and brake pedals)
  • Distracted or impaired driving
  • Medical emergencies (such as fainting or seizures)
  • Mechanical failure (brake or acceleration issues)
  • High-speed loss of control (especially in parking lots or near storefronts)

Retail spaces, restaurants, and homes located near roadways or parking areas are particularly vulnerable.

These crashes can cause:

  • Severe injuries to occupants, pedestrians, or people inside the building
  • Structural damage that may render a property unsafe
  • Business interruption losses for commercial properties

When a crash penetrates a building, injuries can be especially severe due to the unexpected nature of the impact.
