Man Killed in Crash With Dump Truck

DumpTruck

Vehicles come in various sizes. When a small one, such as a Tesla, collides with a larger one, like a dump truck, the results are often catastrophic and even deadly.

A 44-year-old man was recently killed in a crash between a Tesla and a dump truck. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of February 25 on Ellis Mill Road in Harrison Township

A Mack Truck, driven by a 51-year-old man from Deptford Township, was heading south on Ellis Mill Road when it collided with a Tesla that was traveling north on Ellis Mill Road. Before the crash, the Tesla veered into the southbound lane and hit the front driver’s side of the dump truck.

The driver of the Tesla died at the accident scene. He was identified as a 44-year-old man from Sewell. The driver of the dump truck was treated at the crash site.

Ellis Mill Road was closed from Richwood Road to Elk Road and Clems Run was closed from Ewan Road to Richwood Road for four hours as police investigated the crash. Law enforcement officials in Gloucester County are still investigating the accident.

What to Know About Dump Truck Accidents

Accidents involving dump trucks are a significant concern due to the size, weight, and unique operational characteristics. Here are some common causes:

  • Driver error. Speeding, distracted driving, or fatigue.
  • Blind spots. Dump trucks have large blind spots, increasing the risk of collisions.
  • Overloaded trucks. Excess weight can lead to tipping or loss of control.
  • Mechanical failure. Brake, tire, or hydraulic system failures are common.
  • Site conditions. Poor road conditions, uneven surfaces, or tight spaces on construction sites.

Common types of dump truck accidents include:

  • Rollovers. Dump trucks have a high center of gravity, making them prone to tipping, especially during unloading.
  • Rear-end collisions. Dump trucks tend to have slower stopping times.
  • Load spills. Materials spilling onto roads can cause hazards for other drivers.
  • Pedestrian accidents. Workers on construction sites are at high risk of being struck.

Due to their size and weight, accidents involving dump trucks often lead to severe injuries or fatalities for other vehicle occupants, pedestrians, or workers. Common injuries include traumatic brain injuries, spinal injuries, crush injuries, and fractures.

Prevention and safety measures include regular vehicle maintenance, comprehensive driver training, and site-specific safety protocols for construction zones. Technology such as backup cameras, proximity sensors, and warning systems can also be helpful.

Determining liability can be complex. Responsible parties may include the driver, trucking company, maintenance providers, or construction site managers. Investigations often focus on driver training, truck maintenance records, and site safety compliance.
