2 Injured in Ocean City Electrocution

Many construction sites involve electrical wiring. These wires can be dangerous if ladders or other tools come into contact with them.
This happened to be the case in Ocean City. Two workers were electrocuted while on a job at the Jersey Shore on the morning of April 27.
The private contractors were rushed to a burn center in Philadelphia after the accident, which occurred in the 100 block of Somerset Lane in Ocean City. The workers were injured after a metal ladder came into contact with electrical wires.
A worker was moving the ladder on the outside of a home when it touched the wires. The person experienced an electric shock. A second worker was trying to help and they were electrocuted after touching the ladder.
The two workers were treated at the accident scene. They were then airlifted to a Level 1 trauma center at Thomson Jefferson University Hospital. Their current conditions are unknown.
What to Know About Electrocution
Electrocution happens when a person is seriously injured or killed by exposure to electrical current. These incidents can occur at home, on construction sites, near power lines, in workplaces, or during severe weather events. Even low-voltage electricity can cause major injuries under the right conditions.
Workplace electrocution is one of the leading causes of fatal construction accidents in the United States. Employers are generally required to follow safety standards established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), including proper training, lockout/tagout procedures, and protective gear requirements.
Electrocution accidents sometimes involve negligence. Potentially responsible parties may include:
- Property owners
- Employers
- Contractors
- Utility companies
- Equipment manufacturers
Victims may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, rehabilitation costs, and long-term disability. In fatal cases, surviving family members may pursue wrongful death claims.
Some of the most common causes of electrocution include:
- Contact with exposed wiring
- Faulty appliances or damaged extension cords
- Downed power lines
- Unsafe construction equipment
- Electrical fires
- Wet conditions near electrical devices
- Improperly grounded outlets
- Workplace accidents involving heavy machinery
Electricity can damage the body internally even when external injuries appear small. Because the heart, muscles, and nervous system rely on electrical signals, a powerful shock can disrupt essential body functions in seconds. Immediate medical evaluation is critical after any serious electrical exposure.
Electrical injuries can range from mild to catastrophic. Victims may suffer:
- Severe burns
- Cardiac arrest
- Nerve damage
- Brain injuries
- Muscle damage
- Respiratory problems
- Vision or hearing loss
- Seizures
- Paralysis
In some cases, symptoms may not appear immediately. A person can feel fine after a shock but later develop serious complications involving the heart or nervous system.
