Unleashed Dogs Attack People, Pets in Hoboken

DogWalker

Dog attacks can happen anywhere. Two dog walkers and multiple pets were injured after a sudden and violent dog attack in a supermarket parking lot near Hoboken, New Jersey. The incident occurred on the afternoon of February 18 when several unleashed dogs exited a nearby vehicle and rushed toward a group of leashed dogs being walked nearby.

Police say the two walkers were each handling multiple dogs when three large, unrestrained dogs, identified as Cane Corsos, ran toward them without warning. The unleashed dogs immediately began attacking, creating chaos in the crowded parking lot. In total, eight leashed dogs were targeted during the incident.

As the walkers struggled to shield the animals in their care, both suffered wrist injuries while attempting to regain control. One of the pets sustained severe wounds and was rushed for emergency veterinary treatment. The injured dog required surgery and ongoing medical care following the attack.

Witnesses described the scene as frantic, with dogs barking, people yelling, and vehicles stopping as the struggle unfolded. Several bystanders attempted to intervene while the walkers worked to separate the animals and prevent further harm. The attacking dogs were eventually corralled back into the vehicle they had exited.

Before law enforcement arrived, the owner of the unleashed dogs reportedly left the scene. Authorities later located and seized the animals as part of an ongoing investigation. Officials confirmed that the dogs were taken into custody and placed under animal control supervision.

Further investigation revealed that the same dogs were allegedly involved in another attack in Secaucus just two days earlier, where two individuals suffered injuries serious enough to require hospitalization. Following that incident, law enforcement had been actively attempting to locate the animals and their owner.

A 42-year-old man from Hoboken resident is facing multiple charges connected to both incidents. He is facing multiple charges, including second-degree aggravated assault, two counts of endangering another person, animal cruelty, risk of widespread injury, and two counts of simple assault.

Local officials stated that previous warnings and restrictions had been issued, requiring the dogs to be leashed and muzzled when in public. The failure to comply with those safety requirements may result in multiple citations, fines, and potential criminal charges.

Animal safety advocates stress that leash laws exist to prevent exactly these types of incidents. Even well-trained dogs can become aggressive or unpredictable in high-stress environments.

Each violation carries a fine of up to $1,000. Authorities continue to review the case, and additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses.
