Several Injured When Car Crashes Into Nail Salon in Howell Township

Vehicles need to stay on the road. When they fail to do so because the driver loses control, they can collide with buildings and cause harm to those inside.
This type of incident recently happened in New Jersey. A car slammed into a Howell Township nail salon on the afternoon of December 2. Police say the crash left several people with minor injuries. The vehicle collided with the Nail Pro on Route 9 South.
Police say the driver, a 76-year-old Jackson resident, accidentally drove into the building. The driver was evaluated by EMS and was not injured. Inside the salon, multiple customers reported minor injuries. Fortunately, nobody was seriously injured. All victims were treated at the accident scene.
The incident drew a large emergency response, including Howell police, local fire departments, first aid squads, the town’s building department, a utility company, and a towing service. Investigators are still reviewing what led to the crash. It is unknown why the driver lost control. Anyone with information is asked to contact Howell Police.
Vehicles Crashing Into Buildings
Vehicle-into-building crashes happen far more often than most people realize, and they can range from minor property damage to severe, life-threatening events.
Cars strike buildings thousands of times each year in the United States. National safety groups estimate that dozens of vehicle-into-building collisions happen every day, involving stores, restaurants, offices, homes, and medical facilities.
Most common causes include:
- Pedal misapplication. A driver accidentally hits the gas instead of the brake, especially common in parking lots and older drivers.
- Driver error or confusion. Misjudging parking distances, putting a car in the wrong gear, or accelerating too quickly.
- Medical emergencies. Sudden events like heart attacks, strokes, seizures, or diabetic episodes can cause a driver to lose control.
- Impaired driving. Alcohol, drugs, or fatigue significantly increase the risk of crashing into fixed structures.
- Mechanical failure. Faulty brakes, stuck accelerators, or steering issues can cause these crashes, although these issues are less common than human error.
- Poor parking lot design. Lack of protective barriers, angled parking facing storefronts, and tight spaces can contribute.
People inside the building, such as employees or customers, are often at higher risk than the driver. Injuries may include:
- Head and facial trauma.
- Broken bones.
- Back and neck injuries.
- Cuts from shattered glass.
- Crush injuries from debris or structural damage.
However, drivers can also be injured, particularly if air bags deploy or the vehicle enters the building at high speed.
