Rise in Dog Bites in Lawrence Township

DogAttacking

You would think that dog attacks would decrease over time as dog owners better understand the laws in their area and learn the best ways to take care of their canine companions. Unfortunately, though, dog bites have been on the rise in certain areas of the country, including Lawrence Township in New Jersey.

Officials are seeing an increase in dog bites in the town and it’s becoming “concerning.” Most of the incidents have occurred at community parks where the dogs have been attacking while off their leashes, which is a violation of the law. The law, Township Ordinance 89-3, requires all dogs to be on a leash in all public spaces unless in designated dog runs. The leash cannot be any more than 6 feet long.

According to the ordinance, allowing dogs to run about the parks while off their leash will lead to penalties. For a first offense, the minimum penalty is a $50 fine. The second offense will result in a $100 fine. For a third offense, the dog owner may go to court. Their dog may be impounded for 15 days at the owner’s expense. There is also a minimum $500 fine and/or 30 days in prison, as well as court costs.

Lawrence Township officials are reminding residents that off-leash dogs are not allowed in regular parks in the town. Leashes are required on all public property. There are no exceptions, even well-trained dogs. The leash requirement is in place for everyone’s protection. Residents, children, other dogs, and other pets are safer when dogs are on leashes while out in public.

Why is Having Dogs on Leashes is Safer

Leashed dogs are safer because leashes give owners control. Having dogs on leashes reduces the risk of their dog running into traffic, getting lost, or approaching aggressive animals or strangers. They help prevent accidents and injuries not just to the dog, but also to people or other pets. Leashes also ensure dogs stay within areas where they’re permitted and discourage potentially dangerous behaviors like chasing wildlife or eating harmful substances.

Leashed dogs are safer for the public because they are under direct control, reducing the risk of unexpected behavior like jumping, barking, or biting. Even friendly dogs can startle people, especially children, the elderly, or those with fears or allergies. A leash prevents unwanted contact, helps avoid dog fights, and ensures compliance with local laws. It also promotes a predictable and respectful environment in shared public spaces.
