Man Killed in Hit and Run Pedestrian Crash

HitRun4

It is always sad when a person is hit by a car. It is especially heartbreaking when they are left for dead.

Sadly, this was recently the case in New Jersey. A recent hit and run crash left a pedestrian dead. The fatal accident occurred on the evening of October 18 in Camden County.

The pedestrian, a 36-year-old man from Sicklerville, was walking in the road in the area of Andrews Road and Lehigh Manor Drive in Winslow Township when he was hit by a vehicle.

The pedestrian was walking west when he was hit. The driver did not stop.

Neighbors describe the scene as chaotic. One witness, who was visiting family nearby, recalled hearing someone shout for help and saw the victim lying in the roadway. Several bystanders rushed over and attempted to assist, questioning why the driver fled. Another person knelt beside the injured pedestrian, urging them to stay awake until emergency responders arrived.

The victim was taken to Jefferson Hospital in Sewell, where he later died. Detectives are now tracking down leads in search of the driver. It is unknown what type of vehicle police are looking for.

Consequences of a Hit and Run Accident

Hit and run accidents have consequences for all involved. The victims do not get medical help in a timely manner, which often results in death.

The driver who flees the scene will also face various consequences if they are ever caught. Here are the most significant implications:

  • Criminal charges. Leaving the scene of a car accident is a crime in every state. This is especially true when someone is injured or killed. Depending on the severity, drivers may face misdemeanors or felonies, which can lead to large fines, probation, or years of prison time.
  • License suspension or revocation. States typically suspend or revoke a driver’s license after a hit-and-run conviction. In some cases, reinstatement requires mandatory driving courses, insurance filings, or court approval.
  • Civil liability. Victims or their families can sue the driver for damages, including medical costs, lost wages, property damage, pain and suffering, and wrongful death.
  • Increased insurance costs. If the driver is identified, insurance rates usually skyrocket. In some cases, insurers may drop coverage altogether, requiring the driver to obtain high-risk insurance at significant cost.
  • Mandatory restitution. Courts often order convicted drivers to pay restitution to victims, covering medical expenses, funeral costs, and other losses.
  • Criminal record. A felony hit-and-run conviction can permanently impact employment, housing opportunities, and the ability to obtain licenses in certain professions.
  • Additional charges. Drivers may face added offenses such as DUI, reckless driving, vehicular manslaughter, or obstruction of justice.
