Man Injured in Jersey City Pedestrian Accident

PedestrianShadow

Being a pedestrian can be dangerous, especially at night when visibility is limited. Unfortunately, a New Jersey man is in critical condition after getting hit by a car at night.

The pedestrian accident occurred on the evening of December 14 in Jersey City. A 61-year-old Jersey City man was walking near Communipaw and Mallory avenues when he was hit by a car.

He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center for medical treatment. He is currently in critical condition.

The driver remained at the accident scene. It is unknown why the crash occurred. The accident is under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and Jersey City Police Department.

When Are Pedestrian Accidents Most Common?

Pedestrian accidents tend to be most common during specific times, conditions, and situations when visibility, traffic volume, and human behavior increase risk. Key patterns include:

  • Time of day. Crashes peak during evening rush hours (roughly 4 to 8 p.m.), especially after sunset when visibility drops but traffic and foot travel remain high. Late-night hours also see elevated risk due to impaired driving.
  • Time of year. Fall and winter months bring shorter daylight hours, bad weather, and slippery roads, all of which raise pedestrian accident rates.
  • Urban areas, busy intersections, crosswalks, parking lots, and roads without sidewalks are frequent sites.
  • Contributing factors. Speeding, distracted driving, impaired drivers, and pedestrians crossing mid-block or against signals significantly increase crash likelihood.

Pedestrians can prevent accidents by drawing attention to themselves. Using a flashlight and wearing reflective clothing can be helpful.

Drivers can reduce the risk of pedestrian accidents by staying alert, slowing down, and anticipating foot traffic. Here are some prevention tips:

  • Stay focused. Avoid distractions like texting. Even a brief distraction can prevent you from seeing a pedestrian entering the roadway.
  • Slow down in pedestrian zones. Reduce speed near schools, neighborhoods, parking lots, downtown areas, and construction zones.
  • Watch intersections and crosswalks. Scan carefully before turning, especially right turns on red and left turns at green lights, when pedestrians may have the right of way.
  • Be extra cautious at night and in bad weather. Pedestrians are harder to see after dark, in rain, or during fog. Use headlights properly and increase following distance.
  • Expect the unexpected. Children, elderly pedestrians, and people with disabilities may move unpredictably. Be prepared to stop at all times.
