Man Charged With Vehicular Homicide After Fatal Car Accident

Reckless driving is dangerous. Driving in the wrong direction and running red lights can endanger other drivers on the road. It can also lead to fatal accidents.
Sadly, this recently happened in New Jersey. An 18-year-old Belle Mead man is facing a second-degree vehicular homicide charge after a crash killed a Bridgewater woman. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of July 27 in Raritan.
The crash happened at the intersection of Route 202 and First Avenue. Raritan police responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash involving a Genesis SUV and an Acura SUV.
Investigators allege the Genesis, driven by the man, entered the intersection against a red light and collided with the driver’s side of the Acura. The woman driving the Acura died at the accident scene.
Authorities said the man fled on foot immediately after the crash but was quickly located and taken into custody by Raritan police. He was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Investigators also received multiple reports that the man had been driving recklessly before the collision. In one case, a witness saw him traveling in the wrong direction on Route 202.
That same day, the man was charged while receiving medical treatment. Once released from the hospital, he is expected to be transferred to the Somerset County Jail to await a court hearing.
Members of the Somerset County Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team, the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, the Raritan Police Department, and investigators from the Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office all responded to the scene.
The accident is still under investigation. Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office or the Raritan Police Department.
Dangers of Running Red Lights
Running a red light is one of the most dangerous driving behaviors because it often leads to high-speed, unexpected collisions. These accidents are likely to result in severe injuries or fatalities.
Here are some of the biggest dangers:
- High-impact T-bone collisions: Red-light violations frequently cause side-impact crashes, where the side of a vehicle offers much less protection than the front or rear.
- Greater risk of death: Intersection crashes caused by red-light running are among the deadliest types of collisions because vehicles often strike each other at full speed without braking.
- Pedestrian and bicyclist injuries: People crossing legally in a crosswalk may be hit by drivers who ignore traffic signals. Pedestrians and cyclists have little protection, making these crashes especially devastating.
- Multi-vehicle pileups: One driver running a red light can trigger chain-reaction crashes involving several vehicles, particularly in busy intersections.
