Fatal Hit-and-Run in Morristown Leaves Pedestrian Dead

Pedest6

Authorities are searching for a suspect following a tragic hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a pedestrian in Morristown on the morning of March 20.

According to investigators, a 33-year-old man was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck when he struck a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Sussex Avenue and Speedwell Place. The victim, a 68-year-old man, was transported to Morristown Medical Center, where he later died.

Authorities say the victim had nearly reached the sidewalk while crossing Speedwell Place when the truck made a right turn from Sussex Avenue, hitting him and pinning him underneath the vehicle. Surveillance footage and a resident’s video reportedly show the truck dragging the victim more than 50 feet before coming to a stop.

After the vehicle stopped, investigators say the driver exited the truck, observed the victim trapped underneath, and then fled the scene on foot. Law enforcement agencies, including the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, Morristown Police Department, and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, later identified him as the alleged driver. Officials confirmed that the truck involved in the incident is owned by a contracting company based in Mountainside.

The man has been charged with second-degree leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and third-degree endangering an injured victim. The driver is still at large.

Potential Legal Consequences

Under New Jersey law, a conviction for leaving the scene of a fatal accident can carry severe penalties. A second-degree charge may result in up to 10 years in prison, fines of up to $150,000, and a mandatory one-year suspension of driving privileges. In addition, under the state’s No Early Release Act, individuals must serve at least 85% of their sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

The third-degree charge of endangering an injured victim carries potential penalties of up to five years in prison, fines up to $15,000, and a possible driver’s license suspension of up to two years. In some cases, sentences for multiple charges may be served consecutively, increasing total prison time.

Safety Concerns

This incident highlights the dangers pedestrians face even when using marked crosswalks. Early morning hours, reduced visibility, and turning vehicles can all contribute to serious or fatal collisions.

Unfortunately, drivers are not always looking for pedestrians. However, they are reminded to exercise caution at intersections and remain vigilant for pedestrians, particularly at intersections and in designated crossing areas.
