Driver Suffers Major Injuries in East Windsor Crash

Intersections can be tricky. When drivers are not paying attention, they can be involved in serious car accidents.
This was recently the case in East Windsor. A driver was seriously injured after rear-ending a truck. The crash happened on the morning of April 13.
He was airlifted by New Jersey State Police helicopter to a nearby hospital after experiencing serious injuries resulting from a Monday morning collision on April 13,
According to the East Windsor Township Police Department, officers responded to the intersection of Route 33 West and Twin Rivers Drive North in East Windsor. It was determined that a 21-year-old woman from Howell was driving a Subaru Crosstrek in the left lane of Route 33 when it approached the intersection. A Kenworth T880 truck was traveling in the same lane. The semi truck was driven by a 51-year-old man from Bradley Beach.
The truck originally stopped but then moved several car lengths ahead into the intersection before the traffic signal turned green. The driver of the Subaru failed to observe the truck’s movement. She began moving forward as well, causing her to rear-end the truck.
The two vehicles collided, causing the Subaru to catch fire. Responding officers at the accident scene were able to extinguish the car fire. A good Samaritan was also on the scene to assist.
The Subaru driver suffered severe head injuries and was found unconscious. She was extricated from the vehicle and treated at the scene by EMS and paramedics. She was then airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
The driver of the semi truck was not injured in the accident. The names of the drivers involved have not been released. Route 33 was closed for several hours to traffic. The accident remains under investigation
Dangers of Intersections
Intersections are one of the most hazardous areas on the road, even for experienced drivers. They consist of vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists all crossing paths at once. This increases the likelihood of serious accidents.
- Conflicting traffic movements. At intersections, cars may be turning left, right, or proceeding straight at the same time. These overlapping movements create numerous conflict points where collisions can occur, especially when drivers misjudge speed or distance.
- Red light running. One of the leading causes of intersection crashes is drivers ignoring traffic signals. A vehicle entering on a red light can collide at high speed with cross traffic that has the right of way, often resulting in severe side-impact crashes.
- Limited visibility. Obstructions like buildings, parked cars, trees, or poor lighting can make it difficult to see oncoming traffic. This is especially dangerous when making turns or entering an intersection from a stop sign.
