2 Killed in Labor Day Rollover Crash

Unfortunately, car accidents are common during holiday weekends. There are more vehicles out on the roadways, which means crashes are more likely to occur.
Sadly, a crash on Labor Day killed a couple in New Jersey. The fatal accident occurred on the evening of September 1.
The two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of U.S. Route 206 and Quaker Bridge Road in Shamong Township in Burlington County. According to New Jersey State Police, a pickup truck heading south on Route 206 collided with a Toyota sedan traveling west on Quaker Bridge Road. The impact caused the passenger vehicle to overturn and plunge into a nearby lake, located within Wharton State Forest.
First responders recovered both occupants of the Toyota, who died at the accident scene. The driver of the pickup sustained only minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital. Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances leading up to the crash.
The collision is part of a sobering pattern: at least four people lost their lives on New Jersey roadways over the Labor Day holiday weekend.
Why Do So Many Accidents Happen During Holiday Weekends?
Agencies like the National Safety Council often warn that Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving are among the deadliest travel periods each year. Why is that?
Holiday weekends unfortunately tend to be some of the most dangerous times on the road. Here are some reasons why:
- Increased traffic volume. More people are traveling for family gatherings, vacations, or events, which means crowded highways and greater chances for collisions.
- Alcohol and substance use. Holidays often involve celebrations where alcohol (and sometimes drugs) are consumed. Impaired driving is a leading factor in fatal holiday crashes.
- Driver fatigue. Long road trips, late-night celebrations, or trying to beat traffic can leave drivers drowsy and less alert.
- Speeding and aggressive driving. People in a hurry to reach destinations may drive faster, follow too closely, or weave through traffic.
- Distractions. With passengers, kids, GPS, and cell phones, distractions are higher, especially during group or family trips.
- Unfamiliar routes. Holiday travel often takes people onto roads they don’t usually drive, increasing the likelihood of mistakes.
While you can’t control other drivers, you can take steps to protect yourself and your passengers:
- Plan ahead. Map out your route and check traffic conditions before leaving.
- Avoid peak travel times. If possible, travel early in the morning or late at night when roads are less congested.
- Don’t drive impaired. Arrange for a sober driver, rideshare, or taxi if you’ll be drinking.
- Get some rest. Fatigue can be as dangerous as alcohol. Get adequate sleep before driving.
